Marvel Unveils X-Men Cast at D23: Adam Driver Is Mr. Sinister, Kit Connor Is Cyclops

Marvel finally made it official. At D23 Expo in Anaheim this weekend, Marvel Studios pulled the curtain back on the cast of its long-awaited X-Men movie — and it is a lineup worth getting excited about. Adam Driver is playing the villain, Kit Connor is Cyclops, and Inde Navarrette, fresh off the surprise hit Obsession, is Rogue. After years of teases, the mutants are officially coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Full X-Men Cast, Revealed

The untitled X-Men film, directed by Jake Schreier, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. Schreier arrives fresh off directing Marvel’s own Thunderbolts* and Netflix’s BEEF, so he knows his way around both superhero spectacle and messy, character-driven drama. • Sadie Sink as Jean Grey — the Stranger Things star was first confirmed in this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and now her place in the team is locked in.

• Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier / Professor X — the Kraven the Hunter and The Sinner actor takes on the telepathic founder of the X-Men.
• Samara Weaving as Emma Frost — the Ready or Not star brings the White Queen’s icy, diamond-hard energy to the MCU.
• Maya Boyd as Storm — the rising newcomer takes on Ororo Munroe, the weather-controlling powerhouse and one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes.
• Inde Navarrette as Rogue — coming off a potentially star-making turn in the hit movie Obsession, Navarrette steps into the gloves of the southern powerhouse who absorbs the powers of anyone she touches.
• Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury / Mister Sinister — the Star Wars and Marriage Story star finally joins the Marvel universe, and he is playing one of the X-Men’s most sinister schemers.

It is a bold mix of established stars and fresh faces — and notably, this is a roster built around younger actors in the lead hero roles, which feels very much in line with Marvel’s current direction.

Who Are These Characters?

For casual fans who know the names but not the lore, here is the quick version. Cyclops is the X-Men’s stoic field commander, firing powerful optic blasts he can only control with his visor. Jean Grey is his partner and one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet — and, comics fans know, the host of the cosmic Phoenix Force. Professor X is the telepathic founder who built the X-Men as a school and a sanctuary for mutants. Storm commands the weather and has led the team through some of its greatest eras. Rogue is the touch-averse powerhouse from the American South who absorbs the abilities of anyone she makes contact with. And Emma Frost is the ruthless White Queen, a telepath who can turn her skin to diamond and operates permanently in the gray area between ally and antagonist.

Mister Sinister, meanwhile, is the villain who ties them all together. A Victorian-era geneticist named Nathaniel Essex who was transformed by an ancient cosmic entity, he became obsessed with the Summers and Grey bloodlines, engineering generations of X-Men history from the shadows in pursuit of the “perfect” mutant. He is a master planner who plays the very long game — which makes him the perfect threat to loom over an entire era of MCU storytelling rather than a single movie.

Adam Driver Finally Said Yes — As a Villain

There is a delicious irony in Driver’s casting. The actor has spent years politely turning down Marvel’s advances — Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has joked that Driver turning down offers became a running gag inside the studio. Now he has signed on, and he is not joining the heroes. Mister Sinister, the Victorian-era geneticist who became obsessed with the Summers and Grey bloodlines, is one of the most calculating villains in X-Men history. He is a schemer who works in decades-long conspiracies, which makes him a perfect long-game antagonist for this new era of the MCU.

Driver is also no stranger to franchise pressure — he carried the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Kylo Ren and turned in career-best work in everything from Marriage Story to Ferrari. Expect him to bring that same intensity to a character who genuinely believes he is the smartest person in every room.

What This Means for the MCU

This has been a long time coming. The X-Men have been teased for years, but it was only in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that Marvel finally started formally welcoming mutants into the fold with the reveal of Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey. D23 makes it official: the X-Men are now a real, active part of the MCU’s plans, not just a someday project.

It also marks a clean break from the past. The Fox-era X-Men films defined superhero cinema for two decades — the original X-Men in 2000 helped launch the modern comic-book movie boom, and Logan remains one of the best genre films ever made — but this is a fresh start, built specifically to live alongside the Avengers, Spider-Man, and the rest of the MCU. Bringing back familiar heroes with a new generation of actors is exactly what Marvel did with Spider-Man and Black Panther, and it has worked out well so far.
